The Chamber's Alachua County Education Compact (ACEC), Santa Fe College, and Alachua County Public Schools partnered to host the 4th Annual Career Discoveries Day on Saturday, October 13, at Eastside High School from 9am to 12pm. Career Discoveries Day was a three-hour workshop that offered middle and high school students and their parents information for career pathways to college and career readiness opportunities. Career Discoveries Day offers students the chance to learn more about exciting career options in Alachua County. Students get to hear from keynote and industry speakers and get a chance to ask questions to vendors about their industry sector career opportunities. The keynote for this year's event was New York Times Best Seller and Eastside graduate Nathan Whitaker (author of "Through My Eyes" with Tim Tebow and "Quiet Strength" with Tony Dungy). Past keynotes have been John Spence, Joe Cirulli and Joleen Cacciatore Miller.
Monday evening, the Business Community Coalition hosted a forum to educate citizens on several of the amendments on the November ballot.
The Chamber supports the Half-Cent Sales Tax for Schools, the Children's Trust and the GRU Governance Referendum. The Chamber has not taken a position on the fourth local amendment to change the timing of City of Gainesville elections.
This year's ballot is long and filled with important choices. If you're not familiar with the amendments, we suggest you take a look at this video.
