Day After Update

Though mail-in and other ballots are still being counted in some counties, the majority of winners among candidates and amendments appear to be clear. That said, election results won’t be certified for nearly two weeks.

Presidential Race

Namely, the presidential election remains outstanding and likely will for several days. Battleground states such as Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, Georgia and more remain in toss-up status in this race and at least one state — Pennsylvania — will reportedly be counting ballots through at least Friday.

State Amendments

Among notable approved state amendments — which require 60% voter approval to pass — are one that will raise the minimum wage to $15 over the next several years, and another that amends constitutional language to ensure only American citizens are allowed to vote. State amendments that didn’t pass include one that would have opened up primary elections to all voters, regardless of party and one that would have required amendments to receive 60% of the votes in two separate elections in order to be passed into law.

Local Amendments

Locally, all amendments passed with the exception of one relating to a proposed Growth Management area within which Alachua County would permanently govern land use, regardless of whether the area fell within a municipal boundary. The .14% margin of approval on this amendment is so narrow, however, that further examination of a small number of ballots that remain in question may be warranted by the Supervisor of elections. But an overwhelming majority of those ballots would have to reject this amendment for it to fail. We will keep you posted on this one.
