YPB is made up of activists, students, young professionals and journalists committed to preventing conflict. Young Peace Builders’ current initiative is to establish a Youth Leadership, Media and ICT training center for young women in one of the most deprived, under-served communities in Sierra Leone. The center’s strategy is to provide relevant digital skills to expand opportunity and empower impoverished women to make educated choices in a culture of domestic violence, forced marriage and sexual discrimination.

The organization’s founder, Mr. Herbert Bangura, will be present at the graduation event to introduce his initiative. Bangura was awarded a Community Solutions Program (CSP) fellowship and is working with the River Phoenix Center for Peacebuilding here in Gainesville. As a child, Bangura suffered as a refugee and lost family members and friends in the civil wars that ravaged Sierra Leone from 1991 until 2002. These immense challenges shaped Bangura into an outstanding youth activist, advocate, leader and peace pioneer. Join us in welcoming Bangura to Gainesville and the tech community.
